LACEY, NJ — Two homegrown Lacey residents are the newest members of the township’s police department.
Ryan Zacco and John “Jack” Tirella, both of whom are Lacey Township High School grads, were sworn in as officers in the Lacey Township Police Department at the latest township committee meeting.
The names might sound familiar, too – Tirella is the son of Scott Tirella, a former Lacey lieutenant who retired in 2014.
Zacco, 25, also comes from a law enforcement family – his grandfather is a retired captain. He previously worked as a Class 1 officer in Spring Lake.
Chief Christopher Kenny said that Zacco is confident and dedicated to this town.
Tirella, 24, previously worked as an officer in Ship Bottom and Harvey Cedars. He’s a lifelong Lacey resident and as a previous Eagle Scout, “has been a representative of the township for a long time,” said Capt. Paul Sullivan Jr.
“We’re looking forward to continuing on this tradition,” Sullivan said, referencing Tirella’s father watching in this audience. Sullivan himself is a third generation police officer; his father Paul Sullivan Sr. served in Lacey for 26 years.
“I hope God walks with you every step of the way,” Deputy Mayor Peter Curatolo told the new officers.
“For 20 years, I’ve watched us hire people,” said Committeman Mark Dykoff. “And while the pool has gotten smaller, the quality has gotten just amazing.”
Committeeman Steven Kennis said it was great to have officers who are locals and grew up in Lacey.
“They know where all the hiding spots are,” Kennis said.
“You guys are joining, my opinion, the best police force in the state of New Jersey,” Committeman Tim McDonald said.
Mayor PeggySue Juliano emphasized how proud she was of the department, calling herself a “true blue believer.”
Also at the meeting, Melanie Cruz was appointed as a Class 1 officer, though she was not present.
