Redemption Comes to IMPACT, Live on PPV
IMPACT Wrestling returns to pay-per-view this Sunday night in what will be the company’s first major April event since TNA Sacrifice in 2014. It’s another good sign considering television numbers have been trending up in recent months, in some cases better than ratings have been in years, on top of a successful presence in New Orleans and a shiny new partner promotion in Lucha Underground.
IMPACT Redemption will be headlined by a triple threat match for the world title, as Austin Aries defends against brothers Pentagon Dark and Rey Fenix. They had originally taped several weeks of television building towards a match between Aries and Alberto el Patron, but all of that had to go out the window when the later no-showed multiple events during WrestleCon weekend and was swiftly fired from the promotion. Many speculated that the entire thing was a work, given his previous track record of “shooting” on IMPACT for his previous suspensions and releases, but luckily they’re under new management that – at least on the surface – doesn’t appear stupid enough to keep giving him chances and spotlights.
Matt Sydal defends the X-Division Championship against Petey Williams in a match with an interesting history between two long-time veterans. Sydal, who has becoming Public Enemy #1 ever since signing up with his new spiritual guru Josh Matthews, was actually the first person to ever take the Canadian Destroyer back in the day. And speaking of throwbacks, Scott Steiner teams with Eli Drake who is cashing in one of his two Feast or Fired briefcases for a shot at the IMPACT Tag Team Championships, currently held by LAX.
Lucha Underground will be sending Drago and Aerostar to compete in a special singles match on the pay-per-view that is actually being promoted by Lucha Underground. Tommy Dreamer also brings his House of Hardcore branding to a six-man tag match with Sami Callihan and OVE, so the cross-promotional business deals are firing on all cylinders this weekend. We’ll also see a wild six-way scramble match featuring Dezmond Xavier (who’s been gone for awhile because he was in Japan during the last taping), Taiji Ishimori (who just left his contract with NOAH in Japan), DJ Zema Ion (who wasn’t signed to the company last time we talked to him and is probably working on a per-appearance basis), El Hijo del Fantasma, Trevor Lee, and of course everyone’s favorite X-Division star Brian Cage.
