RESTON, VA — Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department are investigating whether the theft of two bikes worth thousands of dollars from shops in Reston and Springfield are linked, according to court records.
On June 30, around 5:46 a.m., officers responded for a burglary alarm at The Bike Lane store located at 11150 Sunset Hills lane in Reston, according to court records. Arriving on the scene, the officers found the shop’s front door glass was broken. A search of the store revealed that no one was inside. When the store owner arrived, he informed police that a Trek Fuel X 8 valued at $4,300 had been stolen.
An FCPD detective reviewed surveillance video, which showed a single suspect breaking the front door glass in order to force his way into the store, according to court documents. The video showed the suspect flee a few seconds later riding the bike that was reported missing.
Investigators noted that the description of the suspect in the Reston case was similar to that on of a suspect wanted in the theft of an expensive bike from a Springfield store a month earlier, court records say.

In that case, officers responded around 4:03 a.m., on May 21, to a burglary alarm at the Bicycle Pro Shop located at 5230A Port Royal Road in Springfield. Like the Reston theft a month later, surveillance video showed the burglar breaking the front door glass to gain entry and riding off on an expensive bike, court documents say. This time it was a Specialized Epic Evolution Pro bicycle worth $9,000.
Police described the burglar in the Springfield case as a light-skinned Black man in his 20s, of average height and with a thin build, according to court records. He was wearing dark clothing and a mask, which hid the bottom of his face.
No arrests have been made in the two burglaries, which remain under investigation.
