The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team kicked off its 2017-18 season with another impressive showing at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D. on Saturday, Nov. 11.
No team scores were charted at this tournament, but the Huskies did earn several weight bracket championships during the day.
At 125-pounds, #2 Brett Velasquez gained top honors in the tournament with a 10-8 OT win over #9 Brandon Carroll of Augustana. To reach the title bout, Velasquez scored a perfect 4-0 record that included a fall, a technical fall and a forfeit win.
At 133-pounds, Garrett Vos placed second for the Huskies with a 3-1 record. He lost in the title bout by a 10-5 score against Michael Andreano of Briar Cliff. Teammate Jordan Aquino placed fourth in the 133-pound bracket.
At 141-pounds, #7 Jarred Oftedahl scored a first-place finish with a 4-2 victory over teammate Ryan Rodorigo. SCSU dominated the weight class with Travis Swanson posting a third-place finish in the tournament. Oftedahl was 5-0 in tournament action, while 4-1.
At 149-pounds, Jake Barzowski placed second in the tournament, while teammate #1 James Pleski placed third and Taner Trembley placed fifth. Barzowski lost a close 5-4 match to Rudy Guillen of Mary in the title bout.
SCSU gained another top finish with a championship by #1 Larry Bomstad at 157-pounds. He scored an impressive fall at :22 over Chris Leatherman of Mary to win the crown. Bomstad was 5-0 in tournament action with two falls and a tech fall along the way.
At 165-pounds, SCSU’s Devin Fitzpatrick led the Huskies with a 3-1 win over teammate Devin Donovan in the bout for third place. SCSU’s Travis Holt placed fifth in tournament action.
At 174-pounds, SCSU’s Alex Anaya placed third after scoring a win over teammate Kolton Eischens in the match for third place.
In the battle for the top spot at 184-pounds, SCSU’s Austin Rake placed first with an 8-1 decision over Augustana’s Daniel Bishop. Teammate #12 Tyree Overton placed third with a forfeit victory in the bout for third place at 184. Rake was 4-0 in tournament action, which included two falls on his way to the title.
At 197-pounds, Noah Ryan won captured the tournament title with a 5-0 record that included a forfeit win in the title bout. He also posted two falls and an 11-9 OT win in the semifinal bout. #9 Vince Dietz placed third for the Huskies at the tournament with a 4-1 record. In the match for 3rd, Dietz scored an 8-6 OT win over Clayton Wahlstrom of Augustana.

At 285-pounds, SCSU’s Lawrence Phillips turned in a perfect 5-0 record that included two falls and a major decision. In the match for first place, Phillips scored a 3-1 decision over Andrew Petersen of Southwest Minnesota State.
Dakota Wesleyan Open Results
The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 campaign on Nov. 18 with a trip to the Concordia College Finn Grinaker Open in Moorhead, Minn.
