The No. 1 contender to the WWE Championship at this weekend’s Backlash pay-per-view came close to leaving WWE for Impact Wrestling.
Jinder Mahal appeared recently on the Talk Is Jericho podcast and said he was courted by Impact Wrestling before agreeing to return to the WWE.
“There was a pay per view in Orlando on the Sunday, so I live in Tampa, they were like ‘yeah, can you come and talk to us on the Sunday? We wanna talk to you.’” Mahal said, “Saturday, the day before, [Mark] Carrano called me. ‘Jinder, we (the WWE) wanna sign you back.”
Based on the timeline, this would’ve occurred during the Billy Cogan era in TNA. Mahal confirms he had the meeting, but knew in his heart that he wanted to return to WWE.
Jinder added, “I sat literally for 2 years, nobody cared me, because I didn’t care! All of a sudden when I started caring, other people started caring.”
Mahal faces Randy Orton for the WWE Championship at AllState Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, during the SmackDown Live pay-per-view event.
