The list of companies that have signed the White House Climate Pledge
now includes 73 new names. By signing the agreement, companies show their
support for the measures that are announced during the Parisian climate
conference COP 21.
A few examples of fashion brands who have made a pledge to introduce
measures to counter climate change, include Nike, Levi´s and Kohl´s. Prior
to the addition of these 73 new pledges, 81 companies had already agreed to
make a stand against climate change. Amongst these companies were names
such as Amazon and VF Corporation. The Climate Pledge is now supported by a
total of 154 companies.
All companies who sign the agreement are free to decide in what way they
wish to contribute to a more sustainable world. For example, Levi´s goal is
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their office, retail and distribution
facilities by 25 percent by 2020. VF Corporation, which owns brands such as
Eastpak and Lee, strives to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2025 in all
its facilities.
“Climatechange is a global challenge that demands a global response, and
president Obama is committed to leading the fight,” said a spokesman of the
White House in a press release. The president´s climate action plan, when
fully implemented, will cut nearly 6 billion tons of carbon pollution
through 2030. And while the United States is leading on the international
stage and the federal government is doing its part to combat climate
change, hundreds of private companies, local governments, and foundations
have stepped up to increase energy efficiency, boost low-carbon investing,
and make solar energy more accessible to low-income Americans.”
