Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has left Canada, where he and his side were based for a pre-season training camp, and returned home after the tragic death of his brother.
The Spanish giants were set to begin a training programme in Montreal before travelling south of the border to the US, taking part in the International Champions Cup, when the club announced their boss could no longer stay with the squad.
And it has now emerged the French legend’s brother Farid, 54, has passed away after being struck down by cancer.
With the manager leaving, responsibility has been passed down to the Frenchman’s assistant, David Bettoni who will take charge of the squad until Zidane’s return.
This morning the whole Real squad observed a minutes silence for Farid at their training camp in Montreal.
Reports in Spain suggest that Zidane’s absence is only temporary and he will be travelling to the US to manage the team during the International Champions Cup pre-season tournament.
In their schedule, the Galacticos will first face Bayern Munich in Houston, followed by Arsenal in Landover; and finally an early instalment of the Madrid derby when they face neighbours Atletico in New Jersey on July 26.
This drama involving the manager only adds to an already eventful time since touching down in Canada, with much speculation surrounding Gareth Bale’s future with the club.
The Welsh international is on a staggering £600,000 a-week contract but is reportedly out of favour with both his manager and teammates.
