A month after the Morbi bridge collapse killed 135 people due to laxity of authorities, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party
has retained the Morbi seat.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kantilal Amrutiya, a five-time MLA, emerged victorious in the constituency that has been in the spotlight since the bridge tragedy. The local administration was blamed for violating rules regarding hiring a private company for repairs and maintenance.
Amrutiya was photographed taking part in rescue operations following the Morbi bridge collapse. The pictures and video clips went viral on social media platforms. Amrutiya has won this seat five times from 1995 to 2012.

Amrutiya has won by a margin of over 62,000 votes over his Congress rival Jayantilal Patel. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Pankaj Ransariya, who targeted the BJP over the lapses leading up to the bridge tragedy, is at number three.
The colonial-era bridge collapsed on October 30, days after it reopened on the completion of seven months of maintenance work by Oreva, a company primarily known as a watchmaker. The owners are yet to be arrested.
Morbi is dominated by Patidars.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP is set to win the biggest majority by any party ever at elections in Gujarat today.
Gujarat is a bastion of the BJP, which has not lost state assembly elections since 1995. PM Modi was Gujarat’s chief minister for 13 years before becoming prime minister in 2014.
At the last state election in 2017, the party won 99 seats.
