AVON-BY-THE-SEA, NJ — A father drowned Friday morning while trying to save his daughter when she got caught in a rip current at Avon-by-the-Sea.
This is according to multiple media reports, as first reported by News 12 New Jersey and later CBS News in New York.
The girl, believed to be 14 or 15 years old, was swimming at the beach at Avon-by-the-Sea at about 8 a.m. Friday when she suddenly started becoming pulled out to sea near the jetty, according to News 12.
Her father, 39, watching from the beach, jumped into the water to save her and ended up being pulled out himself. He was retrieved by members of the U.S. Coast Guard, but died later Friday morning at a hospital.
The girl was hospitalized but survived, according to CBS.
Beachgoers said there were no lifeguards on the beach at that time.
