Patch is publishing a new story each day featuring remarks made by one of the candidates who spoke at the Sept. 25 meet and greet at the Sherwood Community Center.
So far, Patch has published remarks made by both candidates running for mayor, Catherine Read and Susan Hartley Kuiler, as well as two of the 11 candidates in the city council race, Stacy A. Hall and Kate Doyle Feingold.
The following are remarks made by Rachel McQuillen during the Sept. 25 event, which was co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area and Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce.
“My name is Rachel McQuillan. I’m a current City of Fairfax school board member. I also serve on the city’s parks and recreation advisory board, and I am the public image chair and the assistant treasurer to the Rotary Club of Fairfax.
“My husband and I fell in love with Fairfax City when we purchased our home in the Westmore neighborhood in 2010. We have two children. Our oldest is now a senior at Fairfax High School, and he has always attended Fairfax City Schools. So, I’ve been a part of that community for 12 years.
“For 10 years, I served on the Providence Elementary School PTA, first as the secretary and then as the spirit wear fundraising chair. I’m also a proud graduate of Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University. I have an Associates in Business Administration and a bachelor’s in marketing.
“In 2018, I opened a small dog training and pet care services business here in the city. And prior to that, I worked in finance and accounting for 11 ½ years
“I’m running for Fairfax City Council to provide thoughtful and collaborative leadership to our community. I’m focused on improving public safety, enhancing our communication, maintaining our excellent educational resources, and prioritizing our environmental sustainability.
“I’m also running as an independent candidate, because I want to show that accurate representation does not require the large financial backing or a political party. Instead, it depends on your diligence, your ability to listen and to work closely with our residents.
“I am so honored to have been elected and served as your school board member, and I would be grateful to earn your vote to do the same on the city council.”
Early voting began at the Fairfax City Hall polls on Friday, Sept. 20 and will continue through Saturday, Nov. 2. Polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be two Saturdays (Oct. 29 and Nov. 2) when voters can cast in-person ballots.
