Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has revealed the first gig he ever went to was that of die-hard Manchester City fans Oasis – at Maine Road!
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, the Sky Sports pundit gave a series of interesting answers for ‘First and Lasts’, where he spoke about subjects ranging from his first crush to the first opponent he played against who amazed him as well as why he refuses to read certain footballer autobiographies.
Neville has made no secret of his love of Oasis in the past and had a humorous meeting with Noel Gallagher before a Manchester derby in 2014.
“If Mr Neville continues to use the holy scriptures of Oasis to communicate with the Cockney massive, I shall be forced to come up to Cheshire in the middle of the night and break into his house,” Gallagher joked.
“I will then tie him to a chair, make him listen to the Best Of Simply Red while I pull his tash out one grey hair at a time – with my teeth – liberate those Oasis CDs and s**t in his manbag. You have been warned!”
Neville told talkSPORT’s Laura Woods, when asked about his musical preference: “First gig I went to, was Oasis Maine Road.
“It was amazing, apart from it being at Maine Road and feeling like I was going to be killed by a Man City fan every 10 minutes.”
He also revealed his first crush was on a famous Hollywood star, who was also in hit TV show Friends.
“What is the name of the woman in the Bruce Springsteen Dancing in the Dark video? Courtney Cox, that was my first ever album, Born in the USA,” Neville recalled.
“I watched that single being played on Top of the Pops and he pulls Courtney Cox out of the crowd and starts dancing with her and I was like, WOW, I love this music and from then on rock music was my game.”
Since retiring from football in 2011, Neville has forged a respectable career on Sky Sports, while also having an unsuccessful stint as manager of Valencia in 2015.
When he has free time, he revealed he does not read many books, the last one being written by ex-SAS solider Chris Ryan, titled ‘The one that got Away’, but he will not indulge in any written by players he knows.
“Do you know something, I refuse to read autobiographies of players I know, because they normally don’t represent the player that I know,” he added.
“Not lies, just a flowery version, shall we say!”
Along with a near 20-year spell at Old Trafford, Neville also won 85 caps for England and it was on international duty, where he was first left in awe of an opposition player.
“Romario for Brazil against England, 1995, Umbro Cup – amazing. I couldn’t believe what I was watching,” he said.
