Real Madrid broke with tradition by ditching their famous white kit at the Bernabeu to wear green to raise awareness for climate change.
Zinedine Zidane’s side wore the third kit for the home clash with Espanyol on Saturday as the Spanish capital hosts the UN’s COP 25 Climate Change summit, which begins on 7 December and runs until 13 December.
It will be the second time the club have taken to the field in this kit, but will be the first in an official match, having stepped out in it during a pre-season game.
“This initiative is part of the club’s support for the Castellana Verde initiative and falls in line with the 25th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25),” said a Real Madrid statement.
The club have also erected a huge banner on the front of the stadium which will remain in place for the duration of week-long COP summit.
It is not the first time Real have worn a change of kit in honour of a good cause. In 2016, they donned white shirts made of recycled plastic collected during clean-up operations in the Indian Ocean with the message being to help promote cleaner seas.
They also done the same with their red away strip in 2018, produced by Parley Ocean Plastic who turn plastic waste into high-performance footwear and apparel.
Goals in either half from Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema earned the hosts a comfortable 2-0 win and moved them three points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
