London – Joining in the battle to redefine the industry’s definition
of the word nude, and the likes of , and comes Mia Pielle. Developed by
Harvard Business School MBA candidates Nancy Madrid and Atima Lui, the new
clothing concept seeks to rewrite the industry’s understanding of the
colour nude. Mia Pielle curates all nude-toned clothing items offered
online and brings them together on the one-stop web store.
“As two women of Mexican and Sudanese heritage, we often feel like we don’t
meet the standard of beauty in this country,” explained Lui said to Mic.
“[The industry’s definition of nude] is not nude for everyone.”
Currently in testing-phase, the website will offer users a selection of six
shades of nude to choose from, ranging from ivory, to bronze to mahogany.
After users have choosen their shade of nude, they will be asked to select
what item they are searching for, such as shoes or lingerie. The duo
developed a proprietary algorithm to curate lingerie, clothing and
accessories in their six different shades of nude from a variety of online
retailers and brands.
The idea for Mia Pielle stems from its founders frustration of being
readily unable to access the products available. “We women come in a wide
range of skin tones, and we all deserve products that match our unique
hue,” continued Liu. “What’s interesting is that the fashion industry does
produce brown-colored items in many shades. However, fashion brands treat
these products like fashion colors that come in and out with their
particular seasons and not like a functional nude concept required
year-round.”
“This makes it particularly difficult for multicultural women to find the
right nude product, at the right time, and in the right color to match
their unique skin tone.” The founders, who acknowledge that finding the
right shade of nude can be a challenge for women of all ethnicities and
tones, hopes Mia Pielle will help the fashion industry redefine its current
limited, view of nude.
“Our dream is for every brand and every retailer that offers nude products
to do so in multiple skin tones,” Lui said. “The more companies that make
the change the better for our customers, and for women everywhere.”
