NEW BRAUNFELS, TX — Two zebras that escaped from their pen shortly after they were sold to a property owner in Texas have both died.
Police in New Braunfels, Texas — located in between Austin and San Antonio — said that two animals escaped on late Wednesday afternoon from their pens. The animals had been sold to a property owner earlier that same day.
The animals swam across the Guadalupe River and one of them stayed in the area but the other made its way through a number of busy streets. As the animal “trotted and galloped” across a number of busy streets, police said they were able to ensure that neither the animal nor the public was injured.

When the zebra eventually slowed down and stayed in one area, a helicopter team that consisted of the zebra’s original owners arrived. The helicopter team and police spent over an hour trying to corral the animal so that it could be tranquilized.
The zebra was finally sedated and returned to its owners. However, police said they learned that sometime after it was returned to the owners, the zebra died.
The second zebra returned to the property from which it escaped but on Thursday, police said it escaped again. The zebra was later found dead outside its pen.
When the animal had originally returned to its pen, police said they learned that precautions were taken to stop it from escaping again.
