“Austria forever” thundered from the loudspeakers and the audience waved red and white flags as the far-Right Freedom Party (FPÖ) held its final election rally in Vienna this week.

But the mood was different this time. Numbers were down, and the music echoed uncomfortably across the half-empty square. Two years after it entered the Austrian government in triumph, the first in the recent wave of European far-Right parties to win power, the Freedom Party is battling for its political future.
