AEW’s Tony Khan apparently wasn’t thrilled with the response from an admission that their video game division would result in them running in the red for this year.
Speaking to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson last week, Khan addressed the criticism from last week’s Forbes feature when he said they had made an eight figure investment into video games.
He thought it was comical anyone would try to spin a negative out of the news as their $20 million investment into North Carolina-based Epic Games “looks pretty smart now because it’s worth a lot more than that now.”
“It’s crazy because that’s going to be an even bigger investment that’s going to pay off huge. I have made this huge eight figure investment into video games, but we won’t see any revenue from that until 2022. That’s why it’s not going to pay off in 2021 on our books,” Khan said.
“We are going to deliver a great game for people next year and are going to make a ton of money. We’ll be very profitable on all things next year.”
Khan doubled down that the wrestling division is “significantly profitable” and in their second year of operations, that is “pretty amazing for a startup that has had the level of investment that we have had and the in the amount of time this has been going.”
Khan also put over how they actually grew during the pandemic and didn’t have to lay employees or talent off. He remains optimistic about their future with touring, continued success with pay-per-views, and their TV contract.
