For the production of their latest jeans collection, teen clothing
retailer American Eagle Outfitters has added quite a surprising ingredient:
recycled coffee grounds.
American Eagle launched two new denim collections this month which
incorporate coffee ground, named Denim X Café for women and Denim Flex Café
for men. Each pair of jeans that is included in these collections contains
2.25 grams of coffee grounds. According to Business Insider, there are two
main benefits to the inclusion of coffee in apparel fibres. Firstly, the
jeans are said to protect their wearer from UV rays, and additionally the
material contains natural deodorizers. As the jeans do not necessarily have
to be washed every time they are worn, this also positively contributes to
the environment. Sustainability is beginning to play a more central role at
American Eagle. In April of this year, the company partnered with Make It
Right. The resulting collaboration encouraged customers to bring in their
old jeans to be recycled and used for the production of building materials.
Consumers who purchase a pair of jeans need not worry about a coffee
smell, as the company removed the aroma that produces this smell from the
residue.
The jeans are available in-store and in the brand´s webshop. The
collection for women contains six models, which vary in price from 38
pounds to 44 pounds. For men, the brand has four pairs on offer which cost
44 pounds.
