Arsenal fans poked fun at themselves with a hilarious chant about the supposed lack of atmosphere at the Emirates during their crazy defeat to Liverpool on penalties in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
The travelling fans at Anfield could be heard chanting ‘is this the Emirates?’ when the noise level dropped from the home faithful.
It follows the events in north London on Sunday which saw Granit Xhaka hit out at his own supporters after he was booed off the pitch.
The Gunners captain cupped his ear and swore at fans during the draw with Crystal Palace and, as of yet, has not apologised for his actions.
While many have condemned Xhaka’s response, the supporters have also been criticised for creating a toxic atmosphere at the Emirates.
But they were in a far more jovial mood on Wednesday night – although they won’t have been after the full-time whistle.
In what will probably go down as the most exciting match of the season, the Reds edged the ten-goal thriller to make it through to the quarter-finals.
Joe Willock thought he’d won it with a strike worthy of the occasion, but Divock Origi equalised in the last minute of stoppage time to send the game to penalties.
And the hosts won the shootout 5-4 as Caoimhín Kelleher saved Dani Ceballos’ spot-kick, allowing 18-year-old Curtis Jones to win it.
