Marc Overmars has told Arsenal to sell Mesut Ozil this summer and replace him with Hakim Ziyech.
Overmars, who is now Director of Football at Ajax, claims the Morocco international is a better player than Ozil.
Despite retiring from international duty last summer to focus on his club career, the German failed to nail down a starting role under Unai Emery and registered just two assists in 24 Premier League games.
The 30-year-old signed a lucrative new deal at the Emirates in January 2018, meaning getting his mammoth £350,000-a-week wages off the books will be extremely difficult.
But Overmars, who made 100 appearances for the Gunners between 1997-2000, believes his former side must go all out to sign Ziyech this summer, claiming he’d cost half the wages of the World Cup winner.
“I am a bit surprised that it is still so quiet around Hakim,” Overmars told Voetbal International.
“I think he has played better every year and his statistics are exceptionally good. Many clubs are increasingly looking at that.
“They look more at the numbers than at what he shows and what is happening around him. I think Hakim Ziyech is better than Mesut Ozil.
“I would say sell him (Ozil) and you will get Hakim for half. But they (Arsenal) didn’t listen to me. So it could just be that he stays with Ajax.”
The 26-year-old, who scored against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League semi-final, scored 16 goals and registered 13 assists to help Ajax lift the Eredivisie title.
Perry Groves calls on Arsenal to significantly invest if they want to finish in the top four
Gunners boss Unai Emery is keen to invest in better wide players this summer, with Crystal Palace wing wizard Wilfried Zaha also a target.
Ziyech has previously spoken of his desire to play for Arsenal, and is available for just £25m owing to a contractual clause in his current deal in Amsterdam.
He was on international duty with Morocco at the African Cup of Nations, but the Atlas Lions were knocked out by Benin at the Round-of-16 stage.
