AUSTIN, TX — An Austin couple has been named the oldest living couple in the world, according to Guinness World Records.

Some quick perspective here: The couple have a combined age of 211 years. Birthday girl Charlotte Henderson turned 105 on Friday, while husband John Henderson is poised to turn 107 on Christmas Eve. As CNN reported, the Hendersons have a love story that has, quite literally, stood the test of time as they prepare 80 years of marriage on Dec. 15.
That is not a typo. The Hendersons next month will mark 80 (eighty) years of marriage.
According to the report, the two met while enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin in 1934. As if jumping from a canvas depicting homespun charm from the fertile mine of Norman Rockwell himself, she was studying to become a teacher while John played on the football team as a guard between classes.
The two married in the midst of the Great Depression in 1939, spending $7 on a hotel room for their honeymoon. Again, that’s not a typo. They paid $7 (seven dollars) for a hotel room. Of course, this was also in a year when the average cost of a new car was $750 (seven-hundred fifty dollars) while a new house averaged $4,000 (four-thousand dollars).
We looked it up, but we digress. Back to the Hendersons.
It’s the second record-setting milestone for the husband, who also is recognized as the oldest living former UT football player. While his playing days are long over, he’s still an active Longhorn: For the past 84 (eighty-four) years, he has kept a tradition of attending at least one Texas football game each year, CNN reported.
The two kids are both healthy, according to the report. They recently moved into the Longhorn Village, CNN noted, a senior living community tailored to UT-Austin alumni.
There’s a glut of jokes about marriage, and here’s one: The shortest sentence in the English language is “I am,” while the longest sentence is “I do.” Yet in the case of the Hendersons, there is nothing punitive to their breathtakingly long union but a love story for the ages.
