Borussia Dortmund director of sport Michael Zorc revealed the club were left with little choice but to suspend Jadon Sancho for their 1-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Sancho was not even on the bench for the game on Saturday, with a report by German outlet Kicker claiming the decision was made after the teenager reported late back from England duty.
Lucien Favre told the media before the game Sancho was dropped as a disciplinary measure, but Zorc has added a new perspective.
He said, as quoted by ESPN: “We have a responsibility for the club and, in this case, also for the hygiene of the squad.
“He is only suspended today. Jadon is a good lad, but he’s very young and shot to the top. He might test his limits and that’s why we decided to not call him up today [Saturday].”
Sancho started for the Three Lions in their 2-1 defeat to Czech Republic last week before coming off the bench in the 6-0 win over Bulgaria on Monday night.

The late return comes with Dortmund boss Favre under immense pressure following his side’s indifferent start to the campaign.
Marco Reus’ strike on Saturday lifted BVB up to fourth in the Bundesliga table, one point behind the side they beat 1-0 on Saturday.
Sancho, who left Manchester City to join the Bundesliga giants in 2017, scored 12 goals and registered 14 assists last season and has started this season excellently too.
The England starlet has been linked with a £100million move to Old Trafford following his superb form in Germany.
