BERLIN, CT — Area residents will have another place to get Happy Meals, Big Macs and Big Breakfasts as local officials have approved a new McDonald’s restaurant to be built in town.
Last month, the Berlin Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a mixed-use development off the Berlin Turnpike that will include retail and warehouse components.
But the most notable component of the development is the creation of a brand-new McDonald’s restaurant that will be part of the project.
The well-known fast food eatery will be accessible from Deming Road, the Berlin Turnpike, and Worthington Ridge. The McDonald’s address will be 466 Deming Road.
The Berlin PZC hearing was opened in September and it closed Nov. 14, with a unanimous decision that evening by the land-use board paving the way for construction next year.
At the hearing, Matthew Bruton, an engineer with BL Companies out of Hartford, updated the commission on updated renderings and plans following prior PZC talks on the project.
BL was hired by the applicant Calco Construction and Development Inc. of Farmington, which is building the McDonald’s at the site, which is owned by f 337 Berlin LLC.
Also on hand was McDonald’s construction manager Eric Wagner, who briefed PZC members on some of the building’s architectural particulars.
Town officials supported the new development.
“I just want to say that this development is going to mean a lot to us. I believe this is the first McDonald’s in, probably, three decades … brand new. which I think is kind of cool,” said Chris Edge, Berlin’s economic development director.
He thanked both the applicants and town staff for coming together to carry out the project and iron out the necessary details.
The PZC’s approval ended a nearly three-month-long hearing process that started Sept. 19 and was continued to Oct. 3 and, then, Oct. 17, before finally being closed and decided on Nov. 14.
This would be the second McDonald’s restaurant in Berlin, the other one being located at 185 New Britain Road.
