WASHINGTON, DC — Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Thursday she referred information involving Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to federal investigators. The New York Times reported, citing two sources, the matter may involve sexual misconduct between Kavanaugh and a woman while they were both in high school.
Feinstein, of California, is the top ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. She said in a statement Thursday that she had received information from someone concerning Kavanaugh’s nomination. The person “strongly requested” to remain anonymous and did not wish to come forward or press the matter further. Feinstein said that she is honoring that decision, but “referred the matter to federal investigative authorities.” She refused to elaborate on what the matter involved.
The committee is likely to vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation Sept. 20, with a vote by the full Senate expected the following week. Kavanaugh is President Donald Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy.
The information Feinstein received was sent in a letter. That letter, initially sent to the office of Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo of California, included an allegation of sexual misconduct toward the author of the letter, The Times reported. Feinstein received the letter from Eshoo’s office and she alerted her Democrats colleagues on the panel Wednesday.
Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, chairman of the panel, said his planned timeline would not be affected, The Times reported.

“Sen Grassley is aware of Sen Feinstein’s referral,” said George Hartmann, a Grassley spox. “At this time, he has not seen the letter in question, and is respecting the request for confidentiality. There’s no plan to change the cte’s consideration of Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination”
