The only way Celtic will ever have a chance of winning the European Cup again is if they leave Scotland to join the English leagues, believes rock legend and Hoops fan Sir Rod Stewart.
Celtic suffered another European humiliation on Tuesday night as they lost at home to Romanian side CFR Cluj – failing to progress to the Champions League group stages for the second successive season.
Manager Neil Lennon said his side ‘threw away’ their dreams of competing at Europe’s top table, as they surrendered the lead twice and conceded four goals at Celtic Park to lose 5-4 on aggregate.
The eight-in-a-row Scottish champions have missed out on a £30million pay day by not making the group stages and will now drop into the Europa League, where they will still need to win a two-legged play-off match to continue in European competition this season.
It was another dismal European night for Celts fans and loyal supporter Sir Rod joined talkSPORT on Wednesday to share his disappointment – and admitted he can’t see his club ever being crowned champions of Europe ever again.
Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White, the rock and roll legend said: “It’s very unusual for us not to have a great night at Celtic Park, but I think the reason was we took it took lightly. We thought we were going to win.
“I don’t understand why we didn’t have Christopher Jullien, a £7m player we’ve bought, and Boli Bolingoli, a £3m player, playing. Neither of them are playing – I don’t understand it!
“It’s just one of those days and we have to move on. We go into the Europa league now and let’s go for nine in a row.
“Celtic are never going to win the Champions League, we know that.
“It’s just income for us, and we blew £30m last night by not qualifying.
“They won’t win it again unless we can get into the English league somehow, earn the sort of money Sky can pay, afford the sort of players Arsenal and Tottenham and all the others can buy.
“Us spending £7m is a big deal – how are we ever going to win the Champions League playing £7m for a player?
“We haven’t got the players and we can’t afford the players.
“It’s a small county and I’m going to cry!”
