Frank Lampard understands why some fans have to leave Stamford Bridge early – but admits he has no sympathy for those who departed before watching Chelsea’s miraculous comeback against Ajax.
And the Chelsea manager told talkSPORT one of the people departing west London with the Blues 4-1 down was probably his dad, Frank Lampard Sr, who is ‘always shooting off early’!
Lampard’s side staged a remarkable fightback to draw with Ajax, coming back from three goals down to secure a valuable Champions League point by claiming a 4-4 draw.
They could have, in fact, picked up all three points had Cesar Azpilicueta’s goal not been ruled out after a VAR review, while Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham both wasted chances to score a winner later on.
Such a comeback seemed impossible when Donny van de Beek made it 4-1 to the visitors 10 minutes after half-time, and it was not a surprise to see a small number of Chelsea fans head to the exits.
The departing crowds were well in the minority, with Stamford Bridge still largely filled when the final whistle went, but a few unfortunate souls made a decision which meant they missed one of the truly great Champions League nights.
One such supporter called talkSPORT after the game to reveal he left early, admitting he regretted his decision after watching the remainder of the match – and the fightback – in a pub.
And while Lampard accepts some fans have to leave early – especially from evening matches – he is struggling to feel sorry for those who walked out of the Ajax match.
Joining talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, Lampard was asked by Jim White if he has any sympathy for the fans who left Stamford Bridge early.
“No,” he replied, laughing. “One of them was probably my dad! He’s always shooting off early because of traffic and if the game changes we have to have a conversation later on.

“But the people who stayed – I’ve spoken to my friends at the game and fans – they thought it was a special evening.
“I was just a bit disappointed we didn’t get the extra goal. We had the one chalked off, but even after that I thought we were going to push and get it.
“We were unlucky in the end not to win the game.”
