Tammy Abraham’s mother was reduced to tears after the Chelsea striker was racially abused on social media.
The 21-year-old was subject to the vile abuse after missing the decisive penalty in the Blues’ UEFA Super Cup shootout defeat by Liverpool last month.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard described the racial taunts as ‘disgusting’.
Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba, along with Abraham’s Chelsea team-mate Kurt Zouma, have also been abused on social media since the start of the 2019/20 season.
And Abraham has opened up on the effects of racist abuse, insisting it hurts not only those involved, but family and friends too.
The Chelsea academy graduate, who has been capped twice by England, told the Mirror: “I remember speaking to my mum, she was emotional.
“She was in tears. She was just thinking ‘Why him? Why him?’ It’s obviously not nice, seeing your son getting abused.

“For me I’m always a strong character. It doesn’t affect me as much. But it could affect people who don’t have my personality.”
Abraham has bounced back since his mistake in the Super Cup by scoring four goals in his last two starts against Norwich and Sheffield United.
He is rewarding the faith shown in him by Lampard, who has kept fellow strikers Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi on the sidelines to allow Abraham the opportunity to shine.
Abraham added: “Everyone misses penalties but to miss a penalty in [the Super Cup], I was obviously devastated.
“I’d had a lot of abuse and everything afterwards but Lampard always had his arm around my shoulder, he lifted me up.
“The boys as well – give credit to them. It’s as if I’d never missed the way they supported me. That’s exactly what I needed.”
