LOMITA, CA — A cardboard box with chickens inside was found in the backseat of a suspected DUI driver last month in Lomita, authorities announced on Saturday.
On Oct. 24, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies on patrol in Lomita spotted a car parked at an angle on the sidewalk. According to the Lomita Sheriff’s Station, when deputies attempted to speak to the driver of the car, he appeared unable to comprehend questions or reply.
Upon further inspection of the car, deputies found something unexpected.
“No one was more surprised than our deputies to discover there were additional passengers sequestered in the car,” authorities said. “Turns out our drunk driver wasn’t merely endangering his own life, but also had precious cargo aboard.”
Inside a cardboard box in the backseat, deputies found two chickens. The chickens were seized and safely handed off to LA County Animal Care and Control, authorities said.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, deputies said, and was taken to the sheriff’s station. According to authorities, when the suspect blew into the station breathalyzer about five hours after his arrest, the results indicated the man had a blood alcohol content nearly three times over the legal limit.
“Without getting too deep in the weeds on the math, that means at the time of his arrest, he was actually about four times the legal limit,” authorities said.
According to authorities, the suspect was previously arrested and convicted of DUI with a blood alcohol content over 0.08.
