LA GRANGE, IL – A top Lyons Township High School official said this week the College of DuPage was “absolutely responsive” to his concern that the college was violating state law.

At a school board meeting Monday, member Kari Dillon asked Scott Eggerding, the school’s curriculum director, whether he had heard back from the college on the issue.
At a board meeting two weeks ago, Eggerding said it was “really troubling” the college was not allowing students who got a C or better in College Algebra to take credit-bearing math courses. He was told the college was putting such students in remedial courses.
After the previous meeting, he said he contacted the college and was told the high school needed a data-sharing agreement with the college.
“Once that is finalized, they are going to send us the placement information for all of our students that are in that class, so I’ll have more information then,” Eggerding said. “They aren’t going to share any data until we have (a memorandum of understanding).”
Dillon said she didn’t want to lose sight of the issue because it affects students a lot.
At the last meeting, Eggerding said the allegation that the school was placing C-or-above students in remedial courses was frustrating.
Under state law, he said, such students must be allowed to take credit-bearing courses. That law was enacted because students were being required to take remedial math when they had already shown their math abilities in high school, he said.
