WEST VILLAGE, NY — Reported crime in October for the police precinct that covers the West Village was lower than the same month last year.
But not by much. And defiantly not by as much as the same data showed in July and August this year.
NYPD data reports that, despite strong declines seen in reported crime over the summer compared to the same time periods in 2022, there were only four fewer major felonies reported in October 2023 than October 2022.
That comes out to a decline of 2.4 percent — a far cry from the over 20 percent drops seen in August and July.
Most felonies, like robbery, assault and auto theft, fell by at least a few incidents each compared to October 2022.
But some major crimes went up.
There was one additional rape this year reported in the 6th Precinct for October 2023, and one additional report of grand larceny.
Petit larceny also saw an increase of 10.5 percent. And with five transit crimes reported in October this year compared to only one in 2022, that means, statistically, a 400 percent increase.
Year-to-date, reported major crimes in the 6th Precinct is still showing a strong decline at over 11 percent compared with 2022.
Compared to two years ago, crime is still up so far this year by over 40 percent. That same number in August was 60 percent, which means that despite the slightly higher October data, the precinct could still be trending to end the year on a positive note.
In 2022, crime was 8.3 percent higher compared to 2001 numbers.
Despite the uptick, crime numbers last year were still 22 percent lower than 1998 statistics.
