One can imagine that level of carelessness a memorial dedicated to father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi has now turned into a dumping yard. The memorial in Arnala, a coastal village in Virar where Mahatma’s ashes were immersed on February 9, 1948, has now turned into a dumping yard and the memorial built by Arnala Stambh Samiti is a haven for drug addicts, alcoholic and stay dogs.
“The memorial, spread over 5,000 square feet, has become a home to stray dogs. Drug addicts and alcoholics use the space, which is an insult to Bapu. The memorial is littered with garbage, making it a horrible sight for visitors,” said Dattatray Karale, an activist from Vasai.
