London – Edward Meadham, one-half of British design duo , returned to London Fashion
Week to style and create clothing for Sophia Webster’s footwear
presentation, six months after confirming the closure of his own label.
Footwear designer Webster worked with Meadham to create exclusive
ethereal tulle and satin fashion, including a wedding gown, to be worn by
her models as she unveiled her ‘I Myself, Am Strange and Unusual’ shoe
collection.
The clothing pieces were very much in Meadham’s signature dramatic dark
romantic style and were accompanied by an installation of dried flowers and
butterflies by artist Rebecca L. Law and headpieces by milliner Jo Miller,
which looked impressive in the chapel of Soho’s House of St Barnabas
setting.
Webster’s collection, which explores a darker side featured decadent
textures and embellishments in a rich palette, inspired by the show’s muse
Lydia Deetz, the heroine of Beetlejuice, played by Winona Ryde. Highlights
included embossed leather boots with crystal and stone-encrusted heels,
petrol finished holographic butterflies, as well as delicately beaded
speech bubble bags.
When Meadham was part of Meadham Kirchhoff he did numerous
collaborations including with Topshop, Amazon and Penhalions, however, this
marks his first solo venture following the label’s dissolution last
September.
“Meadham Kirchhoff wasn’t killed by the fashion industry, I think that
it was killed largely by itself,” Edward Meadham said when the label closed
in an interview with i-d magazine. “We were in a quagmire of debt and it
was just becoming impossible to keep up with anything.”
