England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd insists he will not resign following his side’s shock European Championship exit on Friday.
There were high hopes of England winning the tournament with the likes of James Maddison, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Phil Foden featuring in an exciting squad.
Dean Saunders says Phil Foden is better off staying at Manchester City next season
However, the Young Lions’ 2-1 loss to France was followed up with a 4-2 defeat to Romania on Friday.
When asked about his future, Boothroyd, who signed a new two-year deal last month, said: “They’ll have to carry me out.
“I am surprised by the question. It is not reflection on should I stay or go, but reflection on what we have achieved and what we could have done better.
“It is important to have a proper debrief about it.
“We have to pick the bones out of it. If we are going to win a tournament like this there are things we have to improve on.”
Questions were raised over Boothroyd’s team selection against Romania as Foden, who scored a superb solo goal in the France defeat, was dropped to the bench.
The Manchester City starlet was brought on in the 57th minute as England conceded four late goals.
Explaining his decision to leave Foden out from the start, Boothroyd said: “There is a fine line to tread. I have got to look after Phil.
“We all thought it would be right for him to come in as the game wore on and weave his magic.
“We want to keep him as fit as we can. We don’t want him to break because he is a terrific player.
“There is no agreement with Manchester City. We follow him on a regular basis, we know where he is training and playing along with everything else.”
