Chelsea have confirmed that Gianfranco Zola has left the club following the appointment of Frank Lampard as head coach.
Zola was Maurizio Sarri’s no.2 at Stamford Bridge for the 2018/19 campaign.
A statement on the club’s official website read: “Everybody at Chelsea would like to thank Gianfranco for his contribution to a successful season at the Bridge and we wish him the very best of luck in the next chapter of his career. He will of course always be welcome back.”
Lampard’s entire backroom staff is yet to be fully confirmed, but Derby have announced that Jody Morris, as well as first-team coach Chris Jones, will join him in west London.
Eddie Newton, who was Roberto Di Matteo’s assistant when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012, will be promoted to Lampard’s coaching staff having been in charge of the club’s loan players, while Claude Makelele is expected to succeed Newton in this role alongside recently appointed technical adviser Petr Cech.
Meanwhile, Morris, who spent seven years at Stamford Bridge as a player, has expressed his immense gratitude to Derby fans.
“What can I say…This last year I’ve made some of the most amazing memories and experienced some of the most euphoric feelings in my football career,” he posted on his Instagram.
“The warmth in which the city embraced us was evident from day one and continued throughout our time in Derbados..the fans enthusiasm and love for this great football club was apparent whenever you walked in the city (or jogged in chaddy).
“I’m so proud and privileged to have felt that. From the off Mel Morris was quite simply a class act and I’m not sure anybody yearns for success in DE24 more. A true fan who is passionate about his team.
“Thank you so much to the players that bought into what we tried to do straight away and gave us all such a great ride. I’ll never forget some of the moments we experienced together.”
