Vincent Kompany has urged Chelsea to sign Frank Lampard as head coach and says his appointment would be a ‘natural match.’
The Blues are searching for a new manager following the departure of Maurizio Sarri, who left to take the vacant Juventus job.
Derby County grant Chelsea permission to speak to Frank Lampard about vacant manager’s job
On Monday, talkSPORT revealed the Blues would appoint Lampard, currently in charge of Derby, this week and the Championship side have given permission for the two parties to talk.
Kompany played with Lampard at Manchester City in 2014 and the 33-year-old recognised his leadership qualities straight away.
“Sign him up. He is the man,” Kompany said at his unveiling as Anderlecht player-manager.
“He was a bit older when he joined Man City. Frank was an incredible professional, he stepped the level up for everyone else, and I’m trying to have the same impact as an older player.
“The match is natural with Chelsea. I completely support him.”
Derby are desperate to keep the 41-year-old, with owner Mel Morris reportedly offering him a bumper £10million contract to stay, but it appears the lure of taking over at Stamford Bridge – where he top scored with 211 goals – will be too strong to resist.
Chelsea are expected to pay around £4million in compensation if they can reach an agreement with Lampard.
Kompany won four Premier League titles, four EFL Cups and two FA Cups with City in 360 appearances, having joined in 2008 and has returned to his former club in Belgium.
