Drivers run into car trouble every day on the Capital Beltway around DC. On Wednesday, one of those drivers was Gen. Colin Powell, and a random stranger was kind enough to step in.
The four-star general and former Secretary of State shared his story on Facebook of a good Samaritan helping him with a flat tire. Powell had been on his way to a medical appointment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. when his car’s left front tire below out on Interstate 495. Powell was able to raise the vehicle with a jack and removed some lug bolts, but admitted “it was cold outside and the lug bolts were very tight.”
That’s when a person later identified as Anthony Maggert pulled up in front of Powell’s car. Maggert, who can be seen in Powell’s photo with a prosthetic leg, said he recognized Powell and wanted to help. While working on the tire change, told Powell he lost his leg during his time as a civilian worker in Afghanistan.
Both were rushing to get to appointments at Walter Reed, so Powell didn’t get his name. Luckily the man reached out with a message later that day:
Gen. Powell, I hope I never forget today because I’ll never forget reading your books. You were always an inspiration, a leader and statesman. After 33 years in the military you were the giant whose shoulders we stood upon to carry the torch to light the way and now it is tomorrow’s generation that must do the same. Anthony Maggert
Powell said Maggert’s good deed made his day. “Thanks, Anthony. You touched my soul and reminded me about what this country is all about and why it is so great,” reads Powell’s Facebook post. “Let’s stop screaming at each other. Let’s just take care of each other.”
