NEW YORK, NY — Police officers have a tough job. They’re asked to run toward danger while the rest of us seek safety. They’re asked to make split-second decisions in impossibly complex situations, often while being recorded through a video camera on their chest. And they’re asked to sing and dance better than officers in neighboring and rival departments.
Wait, what? No, you read that right.
Officers across the nation are taking part in the so-called lip-sync battle, where cops sing and dance to popular pop songs such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” and TLC’s “No Scrubs.”
And while we respect it’s a hard task, some officers are just better at this than others. So in that spirit, we’ve decided to highlight the cream of the cops. Here are the 10 best police lip sync videos, in no particular order.
10. Blytheville Police Department singing TLC’s “No Scrubs.”
This sassy video, viewed more than 213,000 times, is pretty intricately choreographed. Each officer’s sync timing is nearly perfect and they even decided to poke a little fun at a fellow officer who was hanging out the side of a cruiser. Beautifully executed.
9. Fort Smith Police Department singing Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’ Dirty” and Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack.”
This one will be near and dear to any ’90s kid as both songs came out in the mid-2000s. In the beginning of the video, one detective in camouflage and shades sings “Ridin’ Dirty” and pulls up next to two uniformed officers sitting in a police SUV. They laugh at the detective and subsequently break out into their own song and dance to “SexyBack.” Points off for doing it in gas masks though, as we can’t see the singing.
8. Dakota County Sheriff’s Office singing Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling.”
The amount of planning that went into this is astounding. The sheriff’s office launches immediately into a comedy skit, pretending to take a dispatch call about the lip-sync challenge. After riffing about their challenger’s video — which, incidentally, features a very cute porcupine — one deputy jumps out of a plane and sings 2 Unlimited’s hit “Get Ready For This.” But that’s only to accept the challenge. The office then launches into a song and dance of Flo Rida’s smash hit “Good Feeling.” The video features cops on bikes, cops on ATVs, an old cruiser and even a tactical vehicle. Oh, McGruff the crime dog makes an appearance as well.
7. Seattle Police Department performing “Downtown” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
These officers have some slick moves and probably weren’t the kids who stood off to the side at the eighth-grade formal. Decked out in full black uniforms, the officers pop wheelies on bikes, shop for scooters, and bust moves anywhere and everywhere they can. On a building. On a bus. In a gondola. Even In front of a chopper with a moose head. It’s all here. Superb camera work, to boot.
6. The Charleston Police Department singing One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.”
Once again, superb camera work is apparent throughout the video. It looks professionally done. The officers set the stage beautifully by acting out a skit, pretending a police cruiser was stolen. They then launch into a song and dance routine of One Direction’s hit song “What Makes You Beautiful.” The officer’s check their pride at the door and rock out with a cow mascot in a cape inside a mall. Well done, officers.
5. The Dover Police Department singing Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.”
This one makes the list because it’s funny. It’s not particularly lip-synced well and there’s not a lot of imagination put into it. But trust us — the first time the officer jigs his head back and forth you’ll have to laugh.
4. The Longview Police Department singing Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.”
It’s not often you see someone fall in love with a battering ram. It’s even less common to see a police officer smash through a door with said battering ram as “Wrecking Ball” plays in the background. It’s hilarious. But it gets better. Our love-struck officer rocks out with other officers to “again,” and of course NSYNC’s jam “Bye Bye Bye.”
3. The Las Cruces Police Department singing Toby Keith’s “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.”
These officers are sure to steal young hearts with a well-choreographed rendition of Toby Keith’s “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” The video starts off with a humorous skit. One big-wig even jokes about how they’re late to the lip-sync game and the chief goes through several “possible” skits, including one with a “bad guy” in the back of a cruiser as two officers sing “I Fought the Law,” by the The Clash. Ultimately the department sticks to its country roots. And the results is pure fire. Points for including a horse and doing what appears to be some type of country line dance.
2. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department singing Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”
This feel-good video has it all. Creativity. Humor. Dancing. It starts off with an officer walking up to the chief and asking him to watch a video of their lip-sync challenge. Very meta. The scene then cuts to shots of various people — cops and community members alike — singing and dancing to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” Everyone puts their heart and soul into the video, with near-seamless lip-syncing. It clearly took a long time to put together. Once officer even uses a shopping cart full of food items as a prop while he dances through a grocery store. The kids aren’t too shabby either.
1. The Apple Valley Police Department singing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens.
Cops. Animals. And that one really famous song about lions that most people under 40 have no idea who sings. Kudos to the Apple Valley police officers who do their best to sing the lyrics “A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh,” in “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” One officer rides a camel. A giant sloth makes it into the video, as does a 10-foot long snake. And a handsome porcupine makes a cameo. Is the dancing and choreography particularly well-done? By most standards, no. Do the animals and song choice elevate the video to all-time status? Let’s just say you’ll be singing “a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh” in your head the rest of the day.
