SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…
ADDENDUM: As of mid-afternoon, Hulk Hogan has been removed from the page he was added to earlier today. This is a developing story…
Perhaps looking to avoid or at least mitigate yet another controversy, Hulk Hogan has been added to the Crown Jewel event this Friday with a little fanfare as imaginable. The one-time biggest star in the industry has seen his image tarnished by recorded racist comments that surfaced on two occasions – once on a sex tape with friend Bubba the Love Sponge and his wife – and another in a jailhouse conversation with his son.
Hogan’s own Twitter page isn’t even touting his return to a WWE event. Hogan is usually ahead of stories regarding his return to public eye in high profile situations.
The only way to know Hogan is going to be at Crown Jewel is on the WWE.com Crown Jewel event page after clicking on the “See More” link. Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, and Triple H are on the top row, then Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, and Kane. After clicking the “See More” link, it expands with four more rows of wrestlers and Hogan is alone on that fourth row.
Hogan’s WWE suspension was lifted this summer after three years. He met with the WWE locker room to address his racist comments, and the reaction wasn’t all positive.
WWE is not using Hogan’s return to a WWE live event to market WWE Network viewership of the event this Friday. WWE had a chance to mention Hogan on Raw and Smackdown this week and didn’t.
What Culture’s story on Hogan’s return includes this: “This is turning into the set-up of an actual joke: How do you make a propaganda exercise even more problematic? Get a racist to appear on it! This is another sensational layer to a sensational story, one almost impressive in how brazen it is. It is absolutely unbelievable, but also so grimly believable as to be inevitable.”
