The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (17-1, 8-0 NSIC) opened the first day of action at the 2017 NCAA Division II Super 3 Region tournament with an impressive showing in Moorhead, Minn on Friday, Feb. 24.
The Huskies lead the team standings after day one with 76.5 points, while McKendree is in second place with 59.5 points. The complete team standings are listed below.
Individually, SCSU advanced nine wrestlers into the semi-finals of the tournament and the Huskies also have one wrestler who has advanced in the consolation bracket.
At 125-pounds, Brett Velasquez gained a forfeit win the first round and also posted a tech fall in second round action to gain a spot in the semifnals on Feb. 25.
At 133-pounds, Mike Rhone posted a bye in the opening round and then lost a close 9-6 match to McKendree’s Naquan Hardy in OT. In the consolation bracket, Rhone stayed alive with a 16-6 major decision over Caleb Olson of Truman State.
Jarred Oftedahl cruised into the semi’s with a pair of falls at 141-pounds. He scored a pin at 1:05 in the first round over CJ Voegeli of Northern State and continued his day with a 3:39 pin against Louie Sanders of MSU, Mankato.
At 149-pounds, James Pleski moved into the semi’s with a bye and a 3-1 decision over MSU, Mankato’s Daniel Close.
Larry Bomstad opened his day with a pin at 1:54 against Steffon Fassett of Central Missouri in the first round at 157-pounds and then added a 9-1 major decision win to gain his bid to the semi’s.
In action at 165-pounds, three-time All-American Gabe Fogarty had a first round bye and then made a statement with his pin at 4:16 against Augustana’s Mitch Rechtzigel.
The wins kept rolling in at 174-pounds as Clayton Jennissen posted a 6-0 decision in first round action and a 6-5 win in the quarterfinals.
At 184-pounds, Uthman Rabiu added to his win totals with a pair of wins in regional play. In the first round he gained a 12-2 major decision over Minot’s Keegan Berry before charting an 8-5 win over David Hamil.
At 197-pounds, Vince Dietz scored a tech fall over Grant Sparks of Central Missouri (19-4) before posting a 14-0 major decision against Dillon Archer of Lindenwood in quarterfinal action.
Austin Goergen, a three-time All-American and the nation’s number one ranked wrestler at 285-pounds, scored two falls in Regional play on Feb. 24. Goergen posted a pin at 1:20 against Chase Miller of Central Missouri and then notched a pin at 2:06 in the quarterfinals against Chris Zimmer of MSU, Mankato.
The Huskies will continue with the final rounds of the regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 25. Fans can listen to the live coverage of the Regional on the KVSC Sports Stream with John O. Peterson and Brad Hildreth on the call.
