Japan has proposed an expansion of catch quotas for Pacific bluefin tuna to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission’s Northern Committee, according to government officials.
The proposal calls for a 10 percent quota expansion for small bluefin tuna weighing less than 30 kg, and a 20 percent expansion for larger bluefin tuna, the officials said Friday. Japan cited the recovery trend of bluefin tuna resources.
The country aims to reach an agreement on the proposal at a committee meeting in the United States in September.
If the proposal is accepted, Japan’s annual catch quota for small bluefin tuna will increase by 401 tons, while the quota for larger tuna will expand by 1,300 tons, which will be shared among Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.
The Northern Committee comprises 10 of the 26 member countries and regions of the WCPFC.
