Joe Cole has paid Chelsea starlet Reece James the ultimate compliment – comparing his delivery to none other than Manchester United and England icon David Beckham.
James became the Blues’ youngest-ever goalscorer in Champions League history by scoring their fourth goal to complete a thrilling comeback in a 4-4 draw with Ajax on Tuesday night.
And speaking on BT Sport, the former Chelsea favourite Cole waxed lyrical about the 19-year-old’s technical ability – having seen first-hand what he is capable of.
“When I was playing in America, I came around to train with the kids,” he said.
“We were having a shooting session and the kids’ shooting was erratic, but James was on the money, on the money, whipping crosses, it was like watching Beckham.”
James is not short of admirers, with Wigan boss Paul Cook recently making a sensational claim about his former loanee.
“I think Reece James could play in goal, he is so outstanding,” he said.
Speaking during the 2018/19 campaign, which saw James scope a trio of accolades at the club’s end of season awards ceremony, Cook explained just what makes the youngster stand out from the rest.
“He is so self-confident, and that is backed up by his ability and work ethic,” he explained.
“All season he has been showing people that he has a very strong career ahead of him, and we are delighted to be playing a small part in his progression.
“He’s player of the month every month, and he’s man of the match almost every week.
“And he’s as good a lad as he is a player. There’s nothing else I can say about him.”
