Virgil van Dijk is now the bookies’ favourite to pick up this year’s Ballon d’Or.
The central defender was instrumental in Liverpool’s success last season as they won the Champions League and finished just a point behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
The 27-year-old was named as the PFA Player of the Year and now he is being tipped for football’s biggest individual prize.
If he were to pick up the 2019 award then he would be the first defender to do so since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
Virgil van Dijk – 4/6
Lionel Messi – 6/5
Cristiano Ronaldo – 12/1

The only Liverpool player to win the Ballon d’Or was Michael Owen in 2001.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s decade of dominance was ended last year when Luka Modric won following his sensational season with Real Madrid and a great campaign with Croatia at the World Cup.
The bookies have made Van Dijk the favourite at 4/6 while Messi has slipped back to 6/5 following his disappointing Copa American campaign.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to score as Argentina were knocked out by Brazil in the semi-final.
Ronaldo is further back on 12/1 despite winning the Nations League with Portugal.
Fellow Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are 18/1 and 25/1 respectively.
