New York – MCM, the company most popular for their all over logo handbags, has
collaborated with German artist Tobias Rehberger for a capsule collection
that will be released later this month.
The artist, who is a 2009 laureate of the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion
Prize, has applied his signature graphic handwriting into a collection of
leather goods including backpacks, shoppers, transformative clutches, and
crossbodies.
Rehberger has referred to the camouflage print on the pieces as “Dazzle
camouflage.” It is meant to be a fresh take on the logo inspired by its
aesthetic during the 70s and 80s.
“This collection is about the history of MCM
,
how MCM has created a strong brand ID by making patterns that only
consisted of logo repetitions all over a bag. I played around with that
idea and reinterpreted it with a redesigned logo rendered in stripes,”
he said to WWD.
Rather than doing the usual all over logo, Rehberger blew up one logo, and
printed all over the bag resulting in a pop-art, retro style aesthetic.
Each style will be available in a limited number of 250 pieces. Price
points for the bags have not been revealed.
