A huge weight has been lifted off of Matt Meuleners’ shoulders, and now it’s back to work.
The former Northern State heavyweight recently qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He won the 125-kilogram (275 pounds) freestyle title at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo., to secure a spot at the trials.
“It is a relief definitely, because you train to make the Olympic team,” Meuleners said, “but you can’t make the Olympic team if you don’t make it to the trials. I put a lot of pressure on myself to qualify. It was a bit of a struggle.”
Meuleners, 26, had tried and failed to qualify for the trials at two previous meets. He did not place at the Bill Ferrell International Open in New York City in November and he finished eighth at the U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier in Las Vegas in December.
