LARCHMONT, NY — The Fuller Center of Greater New York will celebrate the 22nd anniversary of its annual “Walk for Homes” fundraising event on Sunday, but never in the last few decades have the organization’s particular needs been quite so urgent.
As cold weather begins to settle on the Sound Shore, the New Rochelle-based chapter of the group is especially dedicated to help local families, seniors and veterans afford homes in the greater NYC area. Sunday’s walk will help to support those efforts.
“This is our most important walk ever,” Executive Director of The Fuller Center for Housing of Greater NYC Jim Killoran told Patch. “Monies raised help towards our donated labor helping the many families we have helped rebuild, along with our free distribution of sandbags, and expertise.”
He explained that the funds will also help towards supporting the completion of two passive homes to be completed by December.
Killoran added that “the crisis of housing is compounded by the flooding, the lack of affordable ownership, and the exodus of 545,000 people out of the state, with the rents being too high.”
The Fuller Center will be introducing information in the upcoming year on how to have a more flood-resilient home.
“After 17 years of rebuilding, our expertise to share with the community is welcome with open arms,” Killoran said. “Eight families paid off their interest-free mortgages during the past year. The Fuller Center of Greater NYC believes we need to create an intergenerational NY for all to afford to live.”
This fall’s “Walk for Homes” is being organized in conjunction with the Church of St. Augustine and Saint John & Paul Parish. The two-mile walk, planned as more of a pleasant stroll, will start at 1 p.m in Constitution Park, head towards the Long Island Sound, and then circle back.
Starbucks will provide beverages and the church will provide snacks.
