Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State was victorious in the first nine bouts en route to defeating Newman University 42-3 in a nonconference tilt. Included in the nine victories were two falls, a technical fall, a major decision and junior Brendan Eichmann’s 5-3 decision overtime thriller at 174 lbs.
Eichmann was trailing Reece Wright-Conklin 3-2 after Wright-Conklin escaped at 5:50. A second stalling warning handed to the Newman wrestler tied the match 3-3 at 6:12. It stayed that way until Eichmann recorded a takedown at 7:44 to record the 5-3 victory.
#4 David Demo (125 lbs) defeated Kris Workman in an 8-0 major decision. Freshman Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs) followed up Demo’s major decision win an 18-0 technical fall over JP Carter.
Sophomores Drew Lexvold (141 lbs) and #3 Cody Quinn (165) each recorded pins for MSU over Miles Johns and Clark Driz respectively. Lexvold’s fall came at 4:05, while Quinn recorded his pin at 2:12.
Freshman Sawyer Hoffman (157 lbs) and senior Aaron Norgren (184 lbs) defeated Colton Duhr and Tyler Hasenbank in 7-2 and 14-9 decisions, respectively.
Freshman Thomas Allen (149 lbs) and senior Nate Haynes (197 lbs) each won via forfeits.
A 5-2 decision win for Lorenzo Serna over junior Corby Running (285 lbs) was the lone defeat on the night for MSU.
Minnesota State will return to action Saturday as they travel to UW-Parkside to compete in the Wisconsin Open.
