MOORHEAD, Minn. — Redshirt freshman Jesse Munos finished second at 174 pounds to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team at the Finn Grinaker Open hosted by Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
Several Dragons placed on the day as they capped off a successful week. A day earlier, MSUM dominated Dickinson State, 33-9 to open the dual season.
Munos received a bye to open the 174-pound competition (young division), and then followed with a pin of Ridgewater College’s Eric Swenson in just 56 seconds. He then edged St. Cloud State’s Clayton Jennissen, 3-1 in overtime sudden death to advance to the finals. However, Munos was injured early in the finals match against St. Cloud State’s Taylor Lewandowski to give him second place.
At 133 pounds, sophomore Phillippe Walker placed fifth. He opened with a bye and then won in a tiebreaker over Southwest Minnesota State’s Justin Reinsma, 4-3. Walker dropped his next two matches to finish in fourth.
Sophomore Gerad Fugleberg lost his first match at heavyweight but won his next three matches — all by fall — to finish fifth. He pinned Antonio Lopez of Jamestown in 1:16, and followed with a pin of Concordia’s Cody Kasprick in just 20 seconds. In the fifth-place match, he pinned North Dakota State’s John Gusewelle in 3:59.
Redshirt freshman Lucas Moderow placed sixth in the 184-pound young division. He opened with a bye, and then pinned Jasper Gurr of Dickinson State, 1:27. He fell in the fifth-place match to Skyler Carroll of Dickinson State.
Junior Angel Vega was 2-2 at 141 pounds. He beat Beau Buysse of SMSU, 4-3 and also beat Ethan Hildebrandt of SMSU, 4-3. Redshirt freshman Mario Tuccitto won two matches at 141 pounds to finish 2-2. He beat Cody Cline of Iowa Lakes, 8-4 and beat teammate Cory Messer, 14-4.
