MITCHELL, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team placed two individuals at the Dakota Wesleyan Open this past Saturday in the team’s first official competition of the 2014-15 season.
Jacob Begin and Cole Wilson, who each earned third place honors at 174 and 285 pounds respectively highlighted SMSU’s overall performance.
Begin opened the tournament by winning his first two matches by fall and decision, before losing to runner-up Ryan Panko (Unattached) in the semifinals. Begin would rebound with a win by fall over Anthony Navarro (Northern State), before earning a 12-10 decision in the third place match over Zach Fishman (unattached).
Wilson dropped his first match of the day to eventual runner-up Dean Broghammer from Grand View College, before reeling off an impressive eight straight victories to earn third place honors. He earned four wins by fall in wrestlebacks, before closing with a 7-3 decision over Ceron Francisco from Concordia University in the third place match.
Brody Goens at 184 pounds, opened with three straight wins, including one by major decision, to move into the semifinals, before dropping a 6-3 decision to runner-up Sebastian Gardner from Concordia-Moorhead. Goens then lost to Noel Richardson from Concordia University to finish in at tie for fifth place.

SMSU will opens its dual match season this Wednesday hosting St. John’s at the PE Gym starting at 7 p.m.
