NATICK, MA — The Natick Public Schools superintendent search is over, but negotiations with the School Committee’s chosen candidate come next.
At a Friday meeting, the committee unanimously selected Lawrence Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Melissa Spash as the next superintendent in Natick. Negotiations should begin soon.
Spash started as the deputy superintendent role in January 2023, but has risen up the ranks in the Lawrence district since joining there as a middle school math teacher in 2010.
She spent three years as a teacher before becoming a middle school principal in July 2013, which she did until 2019 when she moved to Lawrence High School to serve as principal. She was in the role until 2021.
Spash then became the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, a role she held until taking over the deputy superintendent role.
All this covers a career in education of over a decade, but Spash had another career before education that committee members valued, too.
Spash worked in the finance industry from 1991 to 2008, for companies like General Electric and Platt Builders, a Massachusetts-based company.
Her selection nearly completes a seven-month process that saw over 30 people apply for the job, a mark that committee members said was a positive for the district.
If a contract is agreed to, Spash will step in for interim Superintendent Bella Wong, who has been in that role since previous Superintendent Anna Nolin departed for Newton.
