New Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate aims to get fans back on side with attacking football.
Former Boro manager Tony Pulis was sacked in May after failing to win promotion to the Premier League.
And there appeared to be tension between Boro supporters and Pulis due to the Welshman’s playing style.
Pulis’ side scored just 23 goals at the Riverside in the 2018/19 season, a home record which was only worsened by relegated duo Ipswich and Bolton.
But while insisting the club’s style of play will change, Woodgate, who has been in a coaching capacity at Boro since 2017, defended his predecessor.
The former Newcastle, Real Madrid and Boro defender told talkSPORT: “Let’s get something right, Tony Pulis had Stoke in the Premier League and did a fantastic job.
“He’s been a fantastic manager with over 1,000 games in football, you can’t knock the man.
“But you’ve got a different way of playing, we need to get more fans into the stadium, we want to play an attacking brand of football and obviously you’ve got to work on the training pitch.
“We have a clear view of how we want to move this club forward.
“We’ve got Financial Fair Play to stick by and the chairman [Steve Gibson] has outlined what he wants to do.
“We want to buy young, hungry, energetic players who will bring a real purpose and desire to this football club.”
Robbie Keane, who played alongside Woodgate at Leeds, will join his former team-mate as Boro’s assistant manager.
He will juggle his No.2 roles with Boro and the Republic of Ireland.
Woodgate added: “It’s fantastic for Robbie. I’ve known Robbie Keane for 20 years and I know what he’s going to bring to me and this football club.
“He’s a fantastic guy who knows football, but it’s even better for him to go and learn with [Republic of Ireland boss] Mick [McCarthy], as well.
“He’s going to learn even more. He’s going to get his hands dirty with me, he’ll be on the training field, often doing sessions.
“When Robbie comes back from international duty and we have a game on the Saturday, he’ll need to have a few days off because the mental recharge in this league is really important.”
