MOORHEAD, Minn.–North Dakota State University freshmen Nick O’Brien and Tyler McNutt, wrestling unattached, won Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Open White Division titles in their respective weight classes at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse on Sunday, Dec. 7. Three other Bison, sophomore Clay Cathey, redshirt freshman Grant Nehring and unattached freshman Adam Freimund were runner-up.
O’Brien, a freshman from Plymouth, Minn., went 3-0 to win the 133-pound Dragon Open White Division. He edged Mason Moreno of Rochester Community College 13-12 in his first match. O’Brien then won a 11-6 decision over Kristian Vazquez of Minnesota State Moorhead and recorded a pin of St. Cloud State’s Joe Mosley at 3:48 in the match. He improved to 9-2 overall.

McNutt, a freshman from Saint Joseph, Mo., reeled off four wins to capture the 174-pound Dragon Open White Division. He opened with an 11-7 decision over Zach Doty of Ridgewater College. McNutt then defeated three straight St. Cloud State wrestlers, recording a 10-1 major decision over Austin Rake, a 2-1 overtime win against Aaron Bates and a 10-6 victory over Tim Moore in the finals. He is now 8-7 overall
Cathey, a sophomore from Billings, Mont., split a pair of matches in the Dragon Open 141-pound Red Division. He defeated Philippe Walker of MSU Moorhead 4-3 in the semifinals and then dropped a 4-3 decision to Concordia’s Jacoby Bergeron in the first place match. Cathey is 8-5 on the season.
Nehring, a redshirt freshman from Kimball, Minn., also split two matches in the Dragon Open 157-pound Red Division. He opened with a 4-2 decision over Garrett Hoffner of MSU Moorhead, then fell by an 18-3 tech fall against St. Cloud State’s Clint Poster in the finals. Nehring is now 3-5 overall.
Freimund, a freshman from Harvard, Ill., was runner-up in the Dragon Open 285-pound White Division. He placed second for the second straight tournament. Freimund edged Tyler Hoffman of Concordia 3-2 in the semifinals and lost by fall at 2:23 to St. Cloud State’s Mike Hobbs. Freimund is 4-6 on the season.
Other top four finishes were turned in by redshirt freshman Tirso Lara, third in the Dragon Open 125 Red Division; redshirt freshman Tommy Walton, fourth in the 141 Red Division; redshirt freshman Mitchell Friedman, third in the 149 Red Division; redshirt freshman, fourth in the 157 Red Division, and redshirt freshman Trevour Chavez, fourth in the 165 Red Division.
